Bundesliga : It’s another double for Paderborn

The Bundesliga Men’s final was another Paderborn v Worms Showdown, this time in Hamburg. Defending champions Paderborn had eased past Stuttgart in the semis while Worms edged past the hosts on games countback.

Paderborn were the relatively clear favourite on paper, but Worms had other ideas …

It could have all been almost over after game one but Carsten Schoor put in another very fine performance against eighteen year-old Victor Brytus. Schoor played an excellent match and deservedly won 3-1.

Raphael Kandra demolished Tim Weber in three very clear games, but it was Superman Paul Coll who put Worms in front with an impressive 3-0 win over German hero Simon Rösner. The scoreline looked pretty clear, but it was tighter than it looked and the crowd were in awe.

In the final match Swiss Nici Müller couldn’t afford to drop a game against Worm’s semi-final hero Jens Schoor, and he duly didn’t despite Schoor’s best efforts, giving Paderborn the win on games countback.

In the Women’s final which featured defending champions Paderborn against Frankfurt, Franziska Hennes and Saskia Beinhart put up a great match on the four-wall glass court, Beinhard winning an incredible tie-break 20-18.

It was not to be for her and her team though, Hennes taking the 1-0 lead then Ineta Mackevica and Amanda Sobhy took the match with three-nil wins.

That rounded off a great weekend of Squash, with some nice media coverage from local TV and radio stations. All hosted in Hamburg’s wonderul Sportwerk!

Semi-Finals:

Despite Nick Matthew pulling out late for (his wife is expecting and it’s taking longer than expected I heard) Paderborn’s win over Stuttgart was never in doubt. It made for a nice warm-up for tomorrow’s finals, and Stuttgart showed they have a good few young German players who we hope to see in finals over the next years.

The second was a super tense semi between Worm and hosts Hamburg, with local boy Felix Auer not using his chances in match one, squandering a game ball in game three against Carsten Schoor. Rohrmüller gave Hamburg a fighting chance with his clinical 3-0 win over Weber. Everyone had hoped Mazen could win one game against Coll but his tin count was too high and Coll far too steady. Jens Schoor, always awkward to play despite having retired form PSA, won a crucial fourth game against young Benjamin Aubert. Hamburg’s dream shattered, but a super semi.
