Men : Coll becomes first male Kiwi since 1989 to reach World’s Top Four
New Zealand’s Paul Coll has become the first Kiwi since Ross Norman in March 1989 to reach the top four of the PSA Men’s World Rankings in the December rankings, released today.
Coll, the 28-year-old from Greymouth, reached the final of the Qatar Classic last month before falling to World #1 Ali Farag, and rises a spot from #5, with Karim Abdel Gawad going the other way.
Farag, who returned to World #1 on 1st November, retains that spot after winning his second Qatar Classic title, while Mohamed ElShorbagy and World Champion Tarek Momen complete the top three.
Marwan ElShorbagy (#) Diego Elias (#7) and Simon Rösner (#8) retain their places, while Joel Makin rises a spot to a joint career-high #9 ranking, switching places with Miguel Rodriguez.
A semi-final finish in Qatar sees Fares Dessouky rise to #11, with Mohamed Abouelghar falling to #12. Saurav Ghosal, Mostafa Asal and Mazen Hesham complete the top 15.
The biggest mover on the men’s tour this month is Qatar’s Abdulrahman Al-Malki, who moved up 158 places to World #199 after appearing at the Qatar Classic, where he fell to England’s Declan James in round one.
Women : El Sherbini Stays at #1 in December PSA Women’s World Rankings
Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini has stayed at World #1 in the PSA Women’s World Rankings for December.
El Sherbini makes it two successive months at the top – and a 33rd month in total – and she will headline the draw at the women’s CIB Black Ball Open next week.
The women’s top 20 is unchanged, with Nouran Gohar (#2), Nour El Tayeb (#3), Camille Serme (#4) and Hania El Hammamy joining El Sherbini in the top five.
The rest of the top 10 is made up of Sarah-Jane Perry #6), Amanda Sobhy (7), Joelle King (#8), Tesni Evans (#9) and Salma Hany.
India’s Joshna Chinappa sits just outside of the top 10 at #11, ahead of Nele Gilis, Olivia Clyne , Rowan Elaraby and Yathreb Adel.
The biggest movers on the women’s tour are Swiss pair Alina Poessl and Kate Gadola. Uster-based Poessl moves up 97 places to World #234 after reaching the quarter-finals of the Liechtenstein Open, PSA Challenger Tour event. Gadola, from Greifensee, also appeared in Liechtenstein and rose 66 places to #265 after bowing out in the last 16 to compatriot Cassandra Fitze.
