German Nationals 2020

Top seeds take the titles in Hamburg

On a windy sunday in Sportwerk Hamburg, the finals were played out.

Two times German national champion Raphael Kandra found a tough opponent in Valentin Rapp. After not capitalizing his gameballs, Valentin Rapp surprisingly took the first game. After a very hard and exhausting first game, Raphael pulled back strong in the second and third game.

In the fourth, Valentin was fighting hard but Raphael felt strong with a two one lead. Valentin saved the first matchball, but couldn’t prevent Raphael from taking the second opportunity. Raphael Kandra takes his third consecutive title!

In the women’s final top seed Saskia Beinhard faced the experienced Franziska Hennes. A determined Saskia took the first game. Franziska fought back in the second, leveling up to one all.

However, Saskia’s determination and focus was too good. In the third and fourth game, Saskia proved to be a worthy German champion. After losing only six points in the last two games, she takes home her first national title!

Favourites through to the finals in Hamburg

Friday night’s quarterfinals saw no great upsets, in both the men’s and women’s draw, the favorites marched into the semis in straight games.  UPDATE : top two seeds through to finals, report to follow

In Sportwerk Hamburg, where the nationals have been held for the last five years, men’s top seed Raphael Kandra made it a quick affair in his encounter with Felix Göbel. In the semis, he will meet youngster Yannik Omlor. It will be an interesting semifinal to see if the young rising PSA player can compete with the reigning German champion.

In the other half of the draw, Valentin Rapp, last year’s runner-up, got rid of his opponent in under 30 mins. He will meet veteran Carsten Schoor, who outperformed Tobias Weggen (former back-to-back national junior champ).

In the women’s draw a similar story was on display. Top seeds Saskia Beinhard and Franziska Hennes did not drop a game in their quarterfinals. The semis will be very interesting, as number one seed Saskia takes on the current German champ Nele Hatschek. In the other semifinal, Franziska Hennes will face Katerina Tycova.

The semis will be live on sportdeutschland.tv from 15:00 onwards!
