It’s that time of the decade again…
Election season is here for the mighty Squash Federation! As we all know, Egypt has been the reigning force in the squash world for a few years now. But, like in most countries, the Federation’s leadership isn’t exactly smooth sailing!
A bit like in France—where Jacques Fontaine held tightly to the President’s seat amid opposition and criticism—Assem Khalifa has managed to retain his title as President since 2008, despite the loss of his closest friend Hany Hamouda back in January 2021.
And it looks like Assem might be set for another four years.
While in France the board elects the President, in Egypt, they’re chosen separately. In the last election, the Federation’s board split into two camps with opposing views, making for some lively—and not exactly relaxed—meetings!
Though “Uncle” Assem has faced plenty of criticism, he’s managed to keep the Federation ship afloat despite a series of board member resignations, the most recent one just last month.
Now, Mr. Khalifa is up for another term (the last election was in 2020), but he’s got strong competition. Among his challengers is one of his own board members, Amna El Tarabolsy, a former international player and part of 2003 Egypt’s World Junior Team Championship-winning squad.
Is Egypt ready to elect a woman as President? It sounds a bit familiar…
Probably his biggest rival will be former World #14, Omar Elborolossy, a member of the first-ever World Team Championship-winning squad. Omar is widely respected in the Egyptian squash community and has successfully run his own academy, Elborolossy Academy.
Rounding out the list of contenders is Ahmed Taher, once the coach of Smouha Club in its golden era, and also was the coach that took Amna and her team mates to the World Title in 2003! His chances might be slim, but as always in Egypt, nothing is ever predictable!
On December 1, 2024, at the Federation’s office, one President and seven board members will be elected.
