[3] Jonah Bryant (ENG) 3-1 [6] Patrick Rooney (ENG) 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6 (46m)
Excellent squash. Truly. Fast and furious, fluid, hardly any calls, I counted 4 (including one corrected from no let to a let), which is really amazing. I could have missed a couple, but you see the drills.
Both played today the same ridiculously fast/intense/amazing squash, long drop shots, great volleying, retrieving and counterdropping… and lobbing at will to get out of trouble!
A few too many errors from Jonah in the second (4), uncharacteristic, but the rest of the match was pretty clean of those, 1 in the first game, and that was it! Patrick unfortunately for him, made a few too many. He is struggling with finding the right balance between defence and attacks, and takes a bit too many risks at time, when maybe another shot might have been not only safer but also more efficient. To play winning shots, several conditions must be respected…
A good match to see on replay, if you get the chance….
Patrick : The fast pace isn’t going to work against him, he would be better than me at that, as would be most players!
I was trying to play similar to yesterday, exploring the front but then again, too many errors. I’m trusting that once those shots starts going up more consistently, then, I’ll start beating top 30 players. I can feel it coming, it’s just… I need to fine-tune those short shots… Too many errors….
If I converted more of those today, we probably would have gone up 2/2, but that’s what I’m working on, those are the moments I need to try and do it, so, I’m not too disappointed.
Jonah : “Pat is such a hard player to play. He’s always moving the ball and he has really good skills on him, which you know can be a problem when you leave the ball loose.
“There was good squash from both of us, no nonsense, and everyone was playing the ball, which is always nice to be a part of.
“My dad picked me up after the second game. I made a few unnecessary unforced errors, but after that I was pretty happy with my performance.”
