Carlisle Squash Club Open 2021

Men’s $3k PSA Challenger, 20-23 Jul, Carlisle

Day Four, Final :

Rory Stewart 3-2 Miles Jenkins   11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5 (75m)

What a match we were treated to tonight, it was another very hot humid night but that didn’t stop both players hitting some lovely winning shots.

Rory took the first game – for a change, before Miles evened it up. There wasn’t too much between the two players heading in to the third.

The third game saw Rory drop off with Miles really applying lots of pressure to Rory’s movement with plenty of twisting and turning along with some lovely deception to catch Rory flat footed. 8 – 7 up in the 4th it looked like the title was heading home with Jenkins but Rory managed to find a second wind and before we knew it was 2-2.

The fifth game saw Rory back with a bit more aggression and a few errors coming from Miles he pulled away to take the final game 11-5.

Another brilliant night of Squash enjoyed by all, massive thanks to both players for the efforts all week!

Day Three, Semis :

Rory Stewart 3-2 Sam Todd
Another slow start from Rory which meant the match didn’t really get going until the second. Rory stepped up the court much more aggressive in his play from then and this made all this difference. Sam’s racket skills and some exceptional pick ups had Rory stumbling at times and his finishing really gave the crowd a master class but Rory proved why he is the number 1 seed.

He soaked up all the pressure from Sam’s racket and applied just as much in return with some solid lines and lovely touch.

Tiredness or injury saw Sam struggle come the 5th game and Rory pulled away the deserving winner but a brilliant match which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed!

Miles Jenkins 3-1Harry Falconer
Miles came out very strong picking up everything and moving Harry around the court beautifully. The heat by this point was pretty intense on the courts but this didn’t change the level of squash we were treated to, some lovely finishing and quick racket work from Miles left Harry a little frustrated.

The third game saw a few more errors from the racket of Miles which Harry took advantage of and pushed through with some lovely lifts to take this.

There was never any doubts in the 4th with Miles cutting out the errors and booking his place in the final.

Both matches were played in great spirit and thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd

Day Two, Quarters :

Rory Stewart 3-1 mike Harris
After being half asleep for the first game Rory showed why he is the number 1 seed, Mike had moments of brilliance with his shots but Rory proved far too strong.

Sam Todd 3-1 Elliott Morris Devred
A brilliant game which was entertaining from start to finish. Tiredness kicked in and led to a few too many decisions being made towards the end, but it didn’t take away from a thoroughly great match for the crowd. Todd’s consistency won through.

Harry falconer 3-1 Simon Herbert
The closest match of the night with plenty of decisions but Harry proved too steady.

Miles Jenkins 3-1 Fergus Richards
A good fair game of squash. Very entertaining to watch with plenty of long rallies making each other do plenty of work. Miles forced a few errors out of Fergus at crucial times.
