Farida Fashion & Fortitude: Decoding Fashion and Style on Court

Our first court of order warms you into the world of fashion inside the glass court by first unpacking the difference between two essential ideas in fashion—fashion and style—in a straightforward, no-fuss way.

Together, we will simply understand why the distinction actually matters and how we can apply it in our activewear wardrobe.

Fashion

If you google the term “fashion”, you will find yourself presented with the Wikipedia definition stating, “A term used interchangeably to describe the creation of clothing, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, and jewellery of different cultural aesthetics.”

That is, fashion is what you see everyone else wears in a particular season—be it specific trends, colour palettes, prints, designers—basically anything that is “trending,” which is most likely inspired by the fashion tastemakers, aka the top fashion designers glamorising the four fashion capitals every season.

Style

Meanwhile, style is something else; as the late and great fashion designer, Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, style is eternal.”

In other words, style is personal; it is essentially the exterior expression of your interior, your essence, or what you would like to portray to the outside world. Now, do you see where this is going? Can you guess how it can be relevant on court?

Imagine that your fashion style is your choice of armour on court, the fit that reflects your persona.

Because, whether you are aware of it or not, our personalities are all different, especially when we play in front of an audience that watches and follows us, they inevitably form a perception and image of us.

So, by your understanding of fashion and style, you can consciously curate your persona and daringly choose the armour that best empowers you, boosts your confidence, enhances your performance, and makes you stand out from any other girl on tour because it solely and uniquely reflects you.

Now that said, stay tuned for our upcoming columns where we’ll dive into different fashion personas on court, share practical tips and tricks for integrating them into your own unique style, and—things are about to get even spicier—when we take a closer look at the styles of actual players on tour.
