Morris wins A title at Northumberland Club
A fantastic week of squash came to an end on Sunday, with some fantastic finals across our graded and PSA events to close the show! There were comebacks, upsets and plenty of passion on display to entertain the crowd from start to finish.
In the PSA Squash Tour Challenger $3k final, top seed Karim Aguib had come through the draw relatively unchallenged and hadn’t dropped a game all event, while his opponent, 5/8 seed Elliott Morris, had a more challenging route, including a 3-1 scalp over 2nd seed Ahmed Rashed in the semi-final.
Morris started very well, controlling the T and giving Aguib very little time to settle, thanks to his punishing lengths and accurate volleys, seeing the Welshman race to a well-earned 2-0 lead. Aguib dup deep in the 3rd, storming to a 7-1 lead, and despite Morris’s attempts at a comeback, the top seed took the 3rd with an almighty roar. The tides turned again in the 4th as Morris regained control of the middle of the court, forcing some outrageous retrievals from the Canadian, and on this 3rd match ball, the 5th seed clinched the win to take the Northumbria Open 2026 title (11/6, 11/5, 8/11, 11/6), his 4th title on the PSA Tour!
The A event final saw a repeat of last year’s final, as Duncan Rutherford took on Jack Cornell. Duncan took the win 3-1 (again!), in what was a very entertaining and attacking game of squash!
The A plate final was contested between Eric Mok and Kieran Mahoney, but the match was cut short with Eric 2-1 up, as Kieran unfortunately had to concede due to injury.
The B event final saw a somewhat unexpected final, with both 5/8 seed Guy-Albert Eniona and 3/4 seed Lauren Hall taking out higher seeds to reach the top 2. The final was level after 2 games, but Guy-Albert was clinical in the 3rd and 4th to take the win 3-1!
Mike Wang took on U15 county player Charlie Davies in the B plate final, and it was Charlie who took a 2-0 lead. However, Mike dug deep and pulled off the comeback to take the title 3-2, his 3rd 5 setter of the tournament!
Dave North topped the table in the C event, taking the maximum 12 points; runner-up Peter B Thompson wasn’t far behind on 10 points, losing the decisive match to Dave 3-1!
Thanks as always go to Dave Barnett for organising and running the event all week, to The Northumberland Club for hosting and, of course, to our wonderful sponsors for making the event possible:
