Semis – PSA report
Semi-finals day saw the top four seeded players across the men’s and women’s draws advance to the finals, with Sabrina Sobhy, Lucy Turmel, Kareem El Torkey, and Miguel Rodriguez all claiming respective wins.
England’s No.2 seed Turmel was forced to fight hard for her spot in Saturday’s title decider, eventually holding off No.4 seed Haya Ali in a five-game thriller. After coming from a game behind to lead 2-1, the World No.34 saw Ali come fighting back to send the match to a decider, which went all the way down to the wire.
It was Turmel, though, who ultimately prevailed, booking her spot in the final by a 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 3-11, 11-9 scoreline after 44 minutes of play.
Her opponent in the final, World No.19 Sobhy, had a more comfortable day on court as she dropped just 12 points on her way to a one-sided victory over No.3 seed Nadine Shahin.
The American will be eying a third title of the year in what is proving to be a hugely successful comeback season following a serious wrist injury in late 2024.
Meanwhile, in the men’s event, World No.21 El Torkey ended the dream run of USA’s Nicholas Spizzirri with a hard-fought three-game victory. Spizzirri had claimed some big scalps earlier this week at the Copper event, none more so than USA No.1 Timothy Brownell, but didn’t have enough in the tank to take down top seed El Torkey, falling to a 14-12, 11-8. 11-7 defeat.
Former British Open champion Rodriguez, meanwhile, continued his quest to one better than his 2025 runner-up finish at the Bermuda Open, defeating fellow South American Leando Romiglio by an 11-8, 11-7, 16-14 scoreline.
Quarters – PSA report
The semi-finalists have been confirmed after eight top-quality matches, with two upsets in the men’s draw and all the top seeds prevailing in the women’s tournament.
Fresh off two upsets in a row, Nick Spizzirri now faced compatriot and USA No.1 Timothy Brownell for a spot in the semi-finals. The No.4 seed looked in complete control in the opening two games as Spizzirri looked to be feeling the effects of his surprise win over No.7 seed Nathan Lake in the previous round.
The unseeded American fought his way back into the tie in game three and managed to extend the tie, winning 11-7. Spurred on by winning the third, Spizzirri looked rejuvenated as he stepped back on court for the fourth and after claiming that game, he stormed through to win the decider 11-8, recovering from 2-0 down to book his spot in the biggest semi-final of his career.
Spizzirri will now take on top seed Kareem El Torkey after the Egyptian needed five games to defeat Portugal’s Rui Soares.
The bottom half semi-final will be played out between Argentina’s Leandro Romiglio and No.2 seed Miguel Rodriguez. Romiglio produced one of his best performances in years as he downed the in-form No.3 seed Yahya Elnawasany in straight games. The Argentine won the first two opening games both 11-7 before cruising to victory 11-1 in the third game to set up the all-South American semi-final clash with Rodriguez – who beat Salman Khalil 3-0.
In the women’s event, all of the top four seeds comfortably progressed to the final four, with only one of the top seeds surrendering a game in their respective quarter finals. That player was Egypt’s No.4 seed Haya Ali, who needed four games to beat No.5 seed Alina Bushma. After Ali won the opener 11-8, the pair then traded tiebreak games, with Ali then coming through 11-8 in the fourth. She’ll now face No.2 seed Lucy Turmel, who beat Margot Prow 3-0.
The top half semi-final will see top seed Sabrina Sobhy play Egypt’s Nadine Shahin after the pair recorded clinical victories over Menna Hamed and Noa Romero, respectively.
ROYAL GAZETTE:
AMERICAN DOMINANCE ON DAY TWO
PSA report – Round One
The penultimate Copper event of the 25/26 PSA Squash Tour season got underway yesterday as round one concluded at the STARR Bermuda Open 2026. 16 matches took place at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association in Devonshire, Bermuda with spots in round two up for grabs.
The women’s event saw USA’s Charlotte Sze claim the only upset of the day as she defeated Mexico’s Diana Garcia in straight games to advance to the second round. At still only 16-years-old, Sze showed surprising maturity on the court from the outset of the match as she troubled Garcia from the outset. The Mexican struggled to deal with the Sze weapons and surrendered in just 24 minutes to the American teenager 11-7, 11-3, 11-4. Sze will now face No.5 seed Alina Bushma in the next round as the top eight seeds enter the fray.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, the match of the round came from Spain’s Noa Romero and one of two wildcards Meagan Best. After the higher-ranked Romero took the opening game 11-9, Best stormed back and took the next games emphatically, winning 11-2, 11-5. Romero, determined to avoid an early exit, battled back to win the fourth and fifth games 11-7, 11-6 to advance.
Two upsets took place in the men’s event yesterday as the World event got underway. England’s former World Junior Championships runner-up Finnlay Withington continued his good form from recent events as he took down Egypt’s Mohamed Sharaf in less than half an hour. Withington took the first game 11-8 then eased to victory surrendered just seven more points.
Nicholas Spizzirri and Shahajahan Khan locked horns for the second time in two weeks with Spizzirri once again taking the spoils. The pair met in the Pan America World Champs Qualification event in St Louis recently which saw a four-game win for Spizzirri. Leading 2-0, Spizzirri looked sure to be heading through to round two but the resilience of Khan saw him take the following two games to force a decider. Khan wasn’t able to maintain the momentum and lost out 11-9 in a 92-minute battle.
