Ashton Rain Medino, a 10-year-old from the streets of Manila, has emerged as one of the Philippines’ brightest young squash stars after discovering the sport at a World Squash Day outreach programme in October 2024.
Medino was among five children from the streets of Manila who were welcomed into the sport as a part of the Philippine Squash Academy’s World Squash Day outreach programme, receiving a coaching clinic from national players as well equipment and snacks.
Philippines National Head Coach and former World No.5 Wee Wern Low reflected on the positive impact that World Squash Day has had.
She said:
“For us, World Squash Day gives us a reason to go out to the streets and get children to try out for the first time, and it is a bigger impact than just a regular day.
“We get the whole team throughout the day to help out, and we get kids off the street to come play and that’s how Ashton was found. An event like World Squash Day allows us to invite them in, giving them a better chance in life and a way out.”
