England Squash appoints Massaro in high performance role
Former world no.1 Laura Massaro has been appointed as a high performance coach for England Squash, tasked with helping develop the country’s next generation of players.
Massaro, a former world champion, has been working in a mentoring role since 2019 for England Squash, where she’s played an integral part in nurturing and supporting England’s younger generation of female talent including Lucy Turmel.
In her new role, Massaro will be instrumental in developing England’s rising stars in the England Squash Development and Potential programmes for long-term success as they transition to senior level.
Massaro retired from professional squash in 2019 and is regarded as the most successful female English player of the modern era with 23 titles to her name including one World title, two British Open crowns, three silver Commonwealth Games medals and four British National titles.
Massaro, who was part of the England team that won the 2014 Women’s World Team Championships and the European Team Championships seven times, will prepare and support juniors to represent England at the European and World Junior Championships with the aim to remain as the number one playing nation in Europe and a medal contender on the world stage.
The England Squash Development and Potential national programmes were established in 2016 and provide high performance coaching, athletic development, nutritional education and additional services to a cohort of talented juniors from 11 years upwards.
“I’m really excited to be officially starting my work with England Squash and the junior programme,” said the Lancastrian.
“We have such a rich history when it comes to top juniors and senior players and I hope my input, experiences and learnings from being at the top of the game can help our juniors progress and transition to be successful not only at junior level but at senior level too. I can’t wait to officially get started.”
National Coach David Campion said:
“Laura is a fantastic addition to the England coaching team and we are really excited to be announcing this news. Laura brings something very unique in that she made that very difficult transition from a top junior into a world champion at senior level – the sort of insight that Laura wants to share with our potential stars of the future.
“We all recognise Laura for her combative nature, but she was also a formidable squash player and has some great ideas that will really help.”
England Squash CEO Mark Williams said:
“We are thrilled that Laura has joined our coaching team and that some of the country’s best young players will now have the opportunity to benefit from her experience at the pinnacle of the sport. I have no doubt that Laura will be a source of inspiration to the players and I’m sure she will have a significant impact on their development.”
