Fram Gommendy reports:
Back in May 2024, Santa Barbara School of Squash Executive Director Robert Graham decided to start a FB page. And “Squash for Good“ was born.
Time for another Meet A Pro post, and this time it’s Liz Irving. Liz was a beautiful top player who became a top coach. Thanks for being a guest, Liz!
1) What years did you compete professionally, and what was your highest ranking?
I turned professional in 1983 at the age of 18, and my highest world ranking was No. 2.
2) What was the highlight of your career?
One of the most memorable moments of my career was winning the World Team Championships with the Australian Women’s Team. I also had the privilege of reaching three British Open finals (1988, 1994, 1995) and a World Open final in 1993 – all incredible experiences.
3) What was your favourite tournament to play in and why?
I always loved playing in South Africa. Winning the South African Open a couple of times remains a great memory for me.
4) What are some of your favourite memories from the tour?
The camaraderie among players, the travel, and the experience of competing at the highest level – there are so many memories. The battles on court and friendships off it made it a truly special time in my life.
5) Who was the toughest opponent of your career and why?
Without a doubt, Susan Devoy. Her sheer competitiveness, both on and off the court, made every match a battle. She never let you settle on the T, which kept you constantly under pressure.
6) Where are you originally from?
I was born in Melbourne, but I grew up mainly in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
7) At what age did you start playing, and what got you into squash?
I had a racket in my hand as soon as I could walk! My mother, Jenny, was a top player and also worked and trained at squash centres, so squash was always a part of my life. I’ve always loved anything involving a moving ball and played many other racket sports as well.
😎 Where do you live now, and what are you doing?
After spending 25 wonderful years in Amsterdam, I recently moved back to Brisbane. I absolutely loved my time in the Netherlands, but I’m enjoying being home – especially the great weather and relaxed lifestyle!
9) Do you still play squash?
No, I’ve transitioned to Padel and Pickleball instead. Both are fantastic, fun, and highly social sports!
10) A former or current player you admire that might surprise people?
Even though I coached her, I have to say Nicol David. She is one of the greatest role models in any sport. Her integrity on and off the court is second to none. What stands out most to me is her grace, dignity, and relentless work ethic. In 16 years working with her, she never skipped a training session because she “didn’t feel like it.” Even on tough days, she showed up and gave her all – a true champion.
11) A coach of any era you admire and why?
Keith Walker had a huge influence on me in my early days. He was not only highly skilled but also incredibly motivating – a real teacher of the game and a great human being.
12) Advice to an up-and-coming pro?
Stay committed, be patient, and always keep learning. The journey is tough, but resilience and consistency are key.
13) Thoughts on financing a professional career in squash?
It’s quite tough financially. Players need strong support from their country, sponsors, and federations. The costs of competing at an elite level are high, and while some players manage without significant backing, the reality is that financial support makes a huge difference in success rates.
14) Thoughts on the future of squash and its Olympic inclusion?
It’s fantastic that squash has made it into the LA 2028 Olympics! The key now is ensuring it continues into future Games, particularly the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. If we can secure a long-term Olympic presence, we can truly say that squash has established itself on the global sporting stage.
15) Best general squash advice for anyone?
Enjoy the game! Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, squash is an incredible sport that challenges you physically and mentally. Keep learning, stay active, and have fun!
