[5] Torrie Malik (ENG) bt Asia Harris (ENG) 11-4, 11-7, 11-8 (33m)
A quick match, no dramas, no controversy, good match to see.
Torrie seemed calm and composed today, very focused. She didn’t let Asia really settle in her match, and the games were pretty fast-paced and short (7m, 8m, 6m)
In the third, a bit too many discussions from Asia got her to be conduct warned for dissent, only to see Torrie get the same treatment when she tried and defend her point: “too much talking, any of you contesting the decisions, and I will use code of conduct”, went the ref. Sor’ed.
Torrie was leading 4/3, 2m into the game, when Asia went for a forehand drop shot right front corner, tinned it, while Torrie was trying to get to the ball. Big contact in Asia’s back, “it’s an accident” went the ref, “you were going to the ball, and she happened to be in the way”.
We had an 8 min break while Asia received treatment, and she seemed recovered when she returned, thank God.
Torrie went up to 7/4, a good clawing back from Asia, 6/7, but it’s quickly match ball, 10/6. Asia fights hard, gets an error out of Torrie’s racquet, then find a great winner, but finally bows 11/8.
Torrie : The first game was comfortable really, I was trying to get used to the court, we’ve been playing matches, off season, but competition matches are completely different. Getting my length, making sure I was volleying, I was getting to the front nice and quickly, which was nice.
Second game, hit a few too many tins, trying to finish the rallies too quickly. I seem to make a few too many errors when I lose a bit of concentration. It was very comfortable, so I was, I don’t know, messing about a little bit, oupsie daisy.
In the third, I was 4/3 up, there was a little bit of a collision, which took a little bit of time.
Overall, I think I played well; I’m happy with the way I played. I kept my composure and didn’t let any of the situations or decisions get to me. I was nice and focused today.
