Semi-Finals : Top seeds beaten in HKFC semis
The upsets continued at Hong Kong Football Club as the finalists of the Asian WC Qualifying competition were decided.
Eighth seed Joachim Chuah upset top seed Sanjay Jeeva in an all-Malaysian men’s semi, which second seed Muhd Asim Khan of Pakistan ended home hopes with a five game win over unseeded Tang Ming Hong.
The women’s top seed was also beaten as unseeded Heylie Fung overcame Ainaa Amani in five games, setting up an all-HK final against second seed Toby Tse who came from a game down to beat HK junior Helen Tang.
Quarter-Finals :
Round One : Seeds scattered at HKFC
The PSA World Championships Asian Qualifying event got underway in dramatic style, with seven seeds stunned on the opening day of action at the Hong Kong Football Club.
In the men’s event, Malaysia’s Mohammad Syafiq Kamal produced one of the performances of the day to defeat thirdseed Matthew Lai in straight games, while Hong Kong’s Shing Fung Lam stunned No.4 seed Ameeshenraj Chandaran by an 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3 scoreline.
The other seed to fall in the men’s draw was former World Junior Champion and tournament No.7 seed Hamza Khan, who lost out to Hong Kong’s Ming Hong Tang 17-15, 11-13, 11-7, 11-5.
Malaysian top seed Sanjay Jeeva, however, wasn’t to be denied a spot in the quarter-finals, claiming a routine three-game win over Korea’s Jeongmin Ryu, with Pakistani No.2 seed Muhammad Asim Khan also advancing by the same scoreline after beating Japan’s Naoki Hayashi.
Meanwhile, in the women’s event, unseeded Hong Kong duo Kirstie Wong and Heylie Fung produced the two upsets of the day, both coming from a game behind to defeat No.3 seed Joshna Chinappa and No.4 seed Yasshmita Jadishkumar, respectively.
The pair were joined by fellow [9/16] seeds Akari Midorikawa and Sehveetrraa Kumar after they also claimed ranking upsets to secure their quarter-final berths. Japan’s Midorikawa downed Singapore’s No.7 seed Wai Yhann Au Yeong by a 12-10, 11-6, 11-8 scoreline, while Kumar overcame Hong Kong’s No.8 seed Nga Ching Cheng in a hard-fought three-game encounter.
Elsewhere in the opening round, top two seeds, Malaysia’s Ainaa Amani and Hong Kong’s Toby Tse, claimed strong wins, with India’s No.5 seed Tanvi Khanna and Hong Kong’s No.6 seed Helen Tang both also booking their spots in the quarter-finals.
